Despite undergoing treatments over the last year, my cancer persists and spreads. In fact, the past year was spent on a treatment that subsequent genetic testing revealed would be ineffective for me - testing I had insisted upon, but was denied, before commencing treatment.

During this wasted time, my cancer progressed from a 1-cm lesion in my thoracic spine to what my doctors now describe as "extensive disease" throughout my rib, spine, and pelvis bones. My tumor markers have soared. Further genetic testing unveiled malfunctioning tumor suppressor genes and overactive tumor supporter genes.

The thought that I may not be here next year weighs heavily on my heart. The realization that I won't be here to witness Max Pierrot's 8th-grade milestone, Cameron Pierrot's college graduation, or celebrate Whitney Pierrot's 30th birthday? Man, it just completely crushes me.

It's hard to say out loud, but time really is slipping away.
